Priorities of Our Outpatient Department

DSC00619

Dear Friends of Karuna,

This update is about priorities.

Over the last few years our outpatient department has been flooded with pets and breed dogs and their owners, sometimes from far away. Yes, our good name has spread. Veterinary doctors send their client dogs to Karuna for surgery or inpatient care. Isn’t that wonderful? On one hand, “Yes!”; but recently we have been confronted with the downside: a growing dog population in our own backyard.

Our ability to perform sterilizations is limited; at best we can do 10-12 dogs per week. When our surgeon is kept busy with breed dogs for consultation and sterilizing owner’s dogs from outside our area, then our own duty to the Puttaparthi area is neglected. Many puppies are born and come to the clinic for treatment which keeps us even more busy.

  1. The Board of Karuna Society has decided to take a clear stand on the matter!
  2. Karuna Society is a Rescue Centre for stray and injured animals. We are NOT a pet clinic.
  3. Our first priority is to provide first aid, food and shelter to animals in need who have nobody else.
  4. Our second priority is to effectively control the dog population through Animal Birth Control and Anti Rabies Vaccinations (ABC/AR) to protect humans and animals against rabies and other health issues.
  5. All dogs (including breed dogs) within the Puttaparthi Municipality area will be sterilized free of charge by us. (PLEASE DONATE, as we do not receive compensation from the Municipality.)
  6. All injured local dogs can receive treatment and inpatient care free of charge. (PLEASE DONATE!)
  7. Breed dogs and local pet dogs can ONLY receive first aid treatment and ABC/AR. For all other needs, the owner will be advised to seek help elsewhere (such as pet clinics in Bangalore).
  8. We have restricted our opening timings to 10.00 AM to 1.00 PM. This is to make it possible for the staff to nurse the injured inpatients and long-time disabled animals.
  9. We have implemented a HELPLINE, phone number +91 63050-97226 where information is provided according to the decisions of the Board.
  10. A leaflet is available and distributed in English and Telugu to provide clear information.

With Love,

Clementien
