Raja, Our Rescued Camel

Here is our lucky camel, Raja. He was being led through the streets of Kadiri in Andhra Pradesh, India, with a bedsheet over his back, with the price per kilo of his meat. Camels actually can only be slaughtered in a licensed slaughter house in North India as they are not indigenous here and the veterinary doctors cannot check them before slaughter. They are being walked from North to South India by road. A local policeman filed a case against his owner and called us.

Raja didn’t really fit into our big truck and we had to talk him into “folding up” for the transport to Karuna Society! That was years ago, and Raja has been happily living with us ever since, though the court case is still pending with the High Court of Hyderabad and the owner still wants his “rights”. Raja moves around freely in the compound and is healthy and happy being around all the other animals and people. He is a very friendly fellow!
