Newsletter: We Care About Wild Animals

Dear Friends of Karuna,

Karuna’s Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre is important for the future of all wild animals. In the past there were many species of wild animals in our local forests, but slowly most of the species have been disappearing. Karuna started rescuing wildlife in 2004 with permission from the forest department. Karuna Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre was  first recognized by the Central Zoo Authority on 22 June 2009.  At present we have 46 wild animals receiving permanent care in our old rescue center.

The new Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is the future lifeline for all wild animals in our area.

The new Wildlife Rescue Centre is located on 18 acres, close to the reserve forest. Thanks to our donors Mr. Phillip Wollen (Winsome Constance Kindness Trust, Australia), Mr. Les Ward (Marchig Trusts, UK), Clementien Koenegras (President, Karuna Society), and others – the land purchase and basic infrastructure and construction like water bodies, tree plantation, water tanks, the total compound wall and electricity, could be taken up. The security house, kitchen and the bear rooms construction started from 4 March 2016. This center is now recognized & approved of by the Central Zoo Authority of India as of 2 August 2023.

Thanks to the excellent work of Mr. Brij Sharma (our consultant) of M/s Brij Raj Sharma and Associates Pvt Ltd, who oversaw the design of our Master Layout Plan and who coached us every step of the way to get approval of the animal enclosure designs, we are now ready to continue the construction of the animal enclosures. This will not happen in a mere week’s time! It might take one to one and a half years to complete, depending on funding and technical support.

EMERGENCY REQUIREMENT for funds to complete the construction of the animal enclosures in the new center:

Estimates
1. Finalise the Sloth Bear and Leopard outside enclosures (4 enclosures) – Rs. 1,00,00,000/-   (USD $120,000)
2. Black Buck and Sambar Deer enclosures (4 enclosures) – Rs. 1,00,00,000/- (USD $120,000)
3. Birds Aviaries (2 enclosures) – Rs. 20,00,000/- (USD $25,000)
4. Primate Houses (2 enclosures) – Rs. 40,00,000/- (USD $48,000)

When the construction of the wildlife centre is finalized, Karuna Society will have first aid and shelter for all animals living in our area.

Please help us to accomplish our goal!
