Recently the Supreme Court has stated that no Indian birds are allowed to be caged. They have a right to fly and to be free. This is more so for the National bird the peacock!
Over the last few months the Forest Department has brought us peahens and peacocks for different reasons. At present we have six in our wildlife centre. The holding area is too small and they cannot fly. If we keep them too long they will lose their ability. These six birds are healthy and should be released but the area of our existing sanctuary is not safe for release. The people will pick them up for the feathers and eat them.
Although we are in the process of planning to shift our wildlife rescue centre to our own land near the reserve forest, that will still take some time. The best solution at present is to have a temporary cage/holding area near the proposed site of the new rescue centre. This is just one km. from the reserve forest. If the birds stay there for a month being fed, we can release them one by one and they will settle in our area which is away from people and close to the forest. Around Karuna the animals are quite safe.
The estimate for the bigger temporary cage/holding area is appr. Rs. 50,000/- ($800). Is there anyone out there willing to help? Thank you!
