Karuna Society currently has about 20 Sambar deer and Blackbucks. Blackbucks are included in the endangered species list in India, and the local forest department often call us to assist in rescues and to house the animals until they recover and can be released. In some cases, they have to remain with us for life.
From February 27 to March 1, 2023 three of our staff attended a ‘Zoo Keepers Training’ conducted at Bannerghatta Zoo in Karnataka, through the Central Zoo Authority. We received a sick male peacock from the Forest Department in Bukkapatnam – it was sick and needed treatment. We carefully housed and treated the peacock for several days and he recovered from his illness. We could give the healthy peacock back to the Forest department so they could release it in the same place

Recently we rescued two helpless little monkeys, who are now pals living lovingly together while they heal! The elder monkey is 3-4 months old and was rescued after being electrocuted. The other one was only a few days old when his mother leaped from one tree to the other and missed, falling to her death.
