A few weeks ago our office received a call from the Forest Department of Penukonda to help in the rescue of a leopard cub. It was brought to our center with badly wounded hind legs. The cub was approximately 1.5 months old. Most probably the villagers found it and the dogs attacked it as the mother was hunting. The real story is not known.
At Karuna Society the cub was treated by the veterinary surgeon, who administered a drip, painkillers and antibiotics and treated its’ wounds. It was active and drinking some milk. It was decided by the District Forest Officer that the cub had to be shifted to the Tirupathi Zoo, which has proper facilities for wildlife.
We are wondering why the wild cats are coming so close to human habitat. Most probably there is no more water in the forest, the water bodies have dried up due to the drought. All animals are in search of water. Villagers burn down the forest as they want to have green grass as soon as the rains start and the thousands of grazing goats are eating the planet empty. Hence, wildlife is under a lot of pressure and always at risk.
