Dear Friends of Karuna,<\/p>\n

It has been a long time since you heard from us about the progress of our new wildlife rescue centre development. Our plan is to write a number of newsletters to you, highlighting our efforts to rescue and save wildlife from our area. We will also share with you the lives of these animals, when they came to us, how they are housed at present and why it is sooo important to give them a better life at the new centre!<\/p>\n

To give you a short update on our past: Karuna Society, as a recognised animal welfare society, received in 2002 permission from the Forest Department of Andhra Pradesh to rescue and release wildlife. At the time it concerned mostly monkeys, black bucks, other deer, snakes and birds. We leased 5-acres of land to house these animals. We provided simple construction and used the existing facilities.<\/p>\n

It was only in 2003 when we rescued one of the last “Dancing Bears” in India, that Karuna came into serious wildlife rescue business. Balu, as we named her, could not be released in the wild and had to live with us.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Free the Bears” from Australia stepped in with the funding for our first Sloth Bear enclosure.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2009 we received our first recognition as a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre (mini Zoo) from the Central Zoo Authority, New Delhi.<\/p>\n

In the next newsletter we we’ll introduce you to the Sloth bear family of six and their living conditions at present, as well as our plans for their future.<\/strong><\/p>\n
