In the early hours of 16<\/span>th<\/sup>\u00a0February 2014, Narendra Reddy, the secretary of Karuna Society, received a call from the Forest Department that a young Sloth Bear was trapped\u00a0in barbed wire on the boundary of the mango garden of a farmer from Gunipalli village,\u00a0(20 KM away from our shelter)\u00a0close to the forest.<\/span><\/span>\"\"\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\"\"<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Bear is carefully freed from barbed wire \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0….and sent to Karuna for the night<\/div>\n
The Karuna Rescue Team\u00a0immediately set off\u00a0with our ambulance and\u00a0all necessary equipment and medicine and joined\u00a0the Forest Department official and a veterinary officer at the location. The bear was found in a bad condition\u00a0with blood in his\u00a0mouth and some wounds on his\u00a0back. His\u00a0fur\u00a0was really\u00a0tangled\u00a0in the barbed wire. After observing the condition of the bear, our team and the forest official decided to bring the animal to our shelter for treatment. \u00a0The barbed wire was carefully removed from the\u00a0bear, he was then put in\u00a0a cage inside the truck and transported \u00a0to Karuna’s Wildlife Rescue Centre.<\/div>\n
We provided the bear with water and food and kept him\u00a0in a dark room under\u00a0observation where he settled down for the night.\u00a0Our Veterinary Officer came back one more time to the shelter to examine the bear’s condition\u00a0and everything seemed stable. \u00a0We discussed the options with the local official and decided to release the bear back into the forest.<\/div>\n

Finding the right place for release… \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0..was confirmed when we heard the call
\nof other bears<\/div>\n
The next\u00a0morning, Narendra Reddy along with the forest department officials went to the Gunipalli village and asked\u00a0the local people about the movements of the Sloth Bears in that area. Once they identified the appropriate location for releasing the bear\u00a0they returned to the rescue centre and it was decided to release the animal the next day.<\/div>\n
The following\u00a0evening around\u00a06 PM, the Karuna truck,\u00a0bear and rescue team\u00a0arrived at the location where\u00a0the local Forest Officials and people from surrounding villages joined the operation to release the Sloth Bear.<\/div>\n

The bear was very aggressive and very restless. Thinking that the bear may not find food in the night, he was given some\u00a0fruit to eat to sustain his energy. \u00a0However, when\u00a0Narendra Reddy checked the possibilities of the releasing\u00a0the bear,\u00a0suddenly he observed some bears moving far away on the hill. They were being called\u00a0by the cries\u00a0of the young rescued \u00a0bear.<\/div>\n

So quickly they open the cage and released the bear who\u00a0ran as fast as be could\u00a0up the hill to\u00a0join\u00a0his\u00a0family. \u00a0Once reunited they disappeared\u00a0into the forest.\"\"<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
